The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the lease of a downtown hotel to convert it into a semi-congregate shelter to help the homeless.
The city will lease the Ansonia Hotel at 711 Post St.,to transform it into a 123-unit shelter with the capacity to house up to 250 homeless people.
In addition to beds, it will include a kitchen, community room, laundry, lobby, office space, restrooms and showers on each floor.
In turn, 24-hour case management and staffing services will be available thanks to Urban Alchemy, the city's nonprofit partner, city officials said.
"We are all going to have to work together as a city if we are going to achieve our ambitious effort to get thousands of people off the street and into shelter and permanent housing," Mayor London Breed said in a statement.
Approval of the lease at 711 Post, he said, not only builds on the progress that has been made over the past two years to add new hotels for housing and shelter, but also provides the opportunity to recreate a temporary shelter model that further meets the needs of all of San Francisco's homeless.
"The 711 Post model is an incredible opportunity to provide a stable shelter with resources for those in need and to ensure cleaner, safer streets in the surrounding neighborhood," said Urban Alchemy Executive Director Lena Miller.
"Urban Alchemy is committed to delivering our holistic approach: embracing our homeless neighbors who need safe spaces and embracing the neighborhood so that the quality of life improves for everyone," he added.
