Helped to thwart a vehicle theft

He helped thwart the theft of a citizen's vehicle in San Mateo County after he made a call to authorities at 3:54 a.m. after observing two black-clad subjects exiting an illegally parked vehicle.

San Mateo Police Department (SMPD) officers observed a vehicle parked in the 1300 block of West Hillsdale Boulevard with suspicious markings on the top of the front passenger window.

While the vehicle was being examined, a citizen called the SMPD call center to report a person running and then hiding in the bushes in the 3300 block of Glendora Drive.

SMPD officers quickly arrived on scene and located two men: the first, identified as Mitchell Youtsay, hiding in some bushes; the second, Bryan Hanamoto, hiding under a vehicle.

Both were safely detained.

SMPD patrolmen continued the investigation and discovered that Youtsay was on probation and subject to search, while Hanamoto had warrants for hit-and-run, fraud, and post-release community supervision violation.

Near where Youtsay was discovered, officers located wire cutters, a screwdriver and keys of various types of vehicles. All items located were collected and logged as evidence.

In a search incident to Hanamoto's arrest, officers found a hand tool used for weeding, a wedge tool, a pocket knife and keys for different types of vehicles.

Both Hanamoto and Youtsay were subsequently booked into San Mateo County Jail for attempted robbery, conspiracy and possession of burglary tools.

After the events, where a citizen helped thwart a vehicle theft in San Mateo County, authorities reminded residents: "If you see something, say something," and encouraged the community to use security cameras.

"They are especially helpful in identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras face the street. Our officers regularly request surveillance and you can help by notifying SMPD where the cameras are located in your neighborhood at http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/Nest»they said.
