Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office arrested a man who threatened to kill an elderly man with a gun after negotiations with the attacker, who finally agreed to turn himself in to authorities.
The incident, which took place at a residence in the city of San Carlos, had a good ending, as the victim made it out of the house safely, the Sheriff's Office said in a report.
According to the report, law enforcement officials called in the Crisis Negotiations Unit, as well as the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team and the Unmanned Aerial System were deployed to the area to make contact with the attacker.
With available resources, officers made contact with Matthew Knorpp, the attacker who was intoxicated and in crisis at the time.
Knorpp eventually agreed to leave the house and was taken into custody without incident. A firearm and two pellet guns were recovered and seized at the scene.
He was eventually transported and booked into Maguire Correctional Center.
In situations like this, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said that unless there is imminent danger or threat to others, deputies will conduct pre-assessments, gather as much information as possible and proceed to formulate a plan to de-escalate the situation before attempting to contact people in crisis.
"We understand that the presence of uniformed officers alone can exacerbate situations, and we will use time and distance whenever possible to assess the best course of action for each situation. Utilizing time and distance allows us to take advantage of the many resources the Sheriff's Office has at its disposal to assist in de-escalation attempts when possible," he explained.
