A class action lawsuit seeks to hold the city of San Francisco accountable for raising sinking sidewalks in the city's Mission Bay neighborhood.

The lawsuit, filed last week in San Francisco County Superior Court, is based on a chain of agreements that created the structure for the development of the 300-acre parcel that was formerly part of San Francisco Bay. Under the agreements, the lawsuit alleges, the city assumed responsibility for maintaining Mission Bay's street and sidewalk infrastructure.

The lawsuit says that even when the infrastructure goes down, the city refuses to take responsibility for the necessary work. The plaintiff asks the court to compel the city to fulfill its duty to maintain the spaces.

Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate, a Mexican national who killed tourist Kate Steinle at Pier 14 in 2015, was sentenced to time served on Monday, but that won't end his long journey through the U.S. legal system.

Citing Garcia-Zarate's history of mental illness and the harsh conditions of his confinement, U.S. District Court Judge Vince Chhabria determined that seven years in state and federal incarceration was sufficient punishment for the two federal weapons offenses to which Garcia-Zarate pleaded guilty in March.

Chhabria's sentence, however, does not resolve the charges Garcia-Zarate must face in federal court in West Texas for violating the terms of his supervised release following his conviction for illegal re-entry into the United States after deportation.
