About 5,000 nurses at Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford went on strike Monday morning. Union officials said 93 percent of eligible nurses voted to authorize the strike.

Nurses notified their hospitals of their intention to strike April 13, union officials said, after Stanford management "failed to fairly bargain over union proposals to address staffing shortages, create sustainable nursing careers and support world-class patient care." The nurses' labor contracts expired March 31.

Bay Area residents with unused prescription drugs at home can safely dispose of them at the local police department and other locations this Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The event, organized in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), helps keep harmful chemicals out of local water systems and out of the reach of anyone who might accidentally or intentionally consume someone else's medicine, a problem that has become particularly important due to the opioid epidemic.

A pedestrian died after being struck by a car early Monday morning in East Palo Alto, police said. The collision was reported around 5:09 a.m. on East Bayshore Road at Oakwood Drive.

The man was wearing dark clothing and pushing a shopping cart in the southbound lane of traffic when he was struck by a car traveling in the same direction, according to a police news release. The victim's name was not released as notification of next of kin is awaited.

By unanimous decision, Twitter's board of directors agreed to sell Elon Musk the social network for a deal valued at $44 billion, according to the company, which announced the transaction on Monday.

Musk will buy the San Francisco-based company for $54.20 per common share, making it a private company following the deal that is expected to culminate this year.

For his part, Musk said in a statement that "freedom of expression is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital public square where vital issues for the future of humanity are debated. He added that there will be improvements to the network and new features will be added.

San Francisco city officials launched an $11.4 million grant program to help small businesses and nonprofits recover from the pandemic.

According to a press release from Mayor London Breed's office, the goal of the program is to help stabilize and grow struggling small businesses and nonprofits with grants to train and establish new and existing entrepreneurs, develop new programming, host festivals and events, recruit new businesses and offer technical assistance to small businesses.

After more than two years of virtual meetings, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will return to face-to-face meetings in May, the county announced Tuesday.

The next meeting, on May 3, will take place in the board chambers, located at 400 County Center, Redwood City. But the meeting will still be broadcast virtually and some supervisors will still attend remotely.

There will be limited capacity in the meeting chambers and seating will be spaced to allow for social distancing. Individuals will also be able to view meetings in the lobby outside the board chambers and the use of facemasks inside the chambers is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory, regardless of vaccination status.

San Mateo County Sheriff's Detectives arrested a 25-year-old Half Moon Bay man on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor.

Cesar Gomez Perez was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of three felonies: rape of a 14-year-old minor, meeting a minor for sexual acts and sex with a minor.

The arrest culminates an investigation launched in October 2021 after detectives received a report of sexual assault of a minor, according to a news release issued Wednesday by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

During the investigation, detectives identified Gomez Perez as the suspect and learned of another minor who had sex with the arrestee in a separate incident. Based on the evidence, investigators are concerned that there may be other victims.

Detectives from the Redwood City Police Department's Street Crimes Suppression Team arrested Union City resident Matthew Hendrysiegfried in the 400 block of Veterans Boulevard after a search of his person and vehicle found a significant amount of fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine and evidence of drug sales, for which he was booked into the San Mateo County Jail.

San Mateo police arrested Jesus Acosta Pasos, 28, of San Mateo County, and Julie Kennelly, 43, of Half Moon Bay, both on suspicion of receiving a stolen vehicle and possession of methamphetamine.

Acosta Pasos was also arrested on suspicion of possession of burglary tools and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

The arrest came after San Mateo Police Department officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle near the Bridgepointe Mall at 1:07 p.m. Thursday, where they found Kennelly inside the vehicle and Acosta inside one of the mall's stores.
