The San Francisco Sheriff's Office announced plans this week to create identification badges for its deputies to let the public know if they are fluent in a language other than English.

Identification badges are in the works for more than 100 deputies to indicate that they speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish or Filipino, according to the Sheriff's Office, which said they are the first emergency responders in the city to launch such a program.

Officers must have bilingual certification through the city's Human Resources Department to receive the name tag, and other languages such as Vietnamese, Russian and Arabic will be included in the future, sheriff's officials said.

Twitter agreed to pay a $150 million civil penalty in a settlement with the federal government that requires the social networking giant to do more than just complain about protecting users' private data, according to an announcement Wednesday by Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission officials.

The settlement will resolve allegations that Twitter violated the Federal Trade Commission Act (FTC Act) and an administrative order issued by the same agency in March 2011 by misrepresenting how it would make use of users' nonpublic contact information.

Adding to the drama surrounding Elon Musk, the world's richest man, and Twitter, the social networking platform he may or may not be buying, on Wednesday a San Francisco law firm filed a class action lawsuit against Musk accusing him of intentionally driving down Twitter's stock price through a series of false and misleading statements.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in San Francisco on behalf of Twitter shareholders and describes in detail the history of Musk's intermittent plan to buy Twitter.

According to the plaintiffs, Tesla Inc. chief executive Musk planned to finance the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter by pledging some of his Tesla holdings in order to borrow the purchase price.

However, the drop in Tesla's stock price allegedly caught Musk in a financial bind and he responded by trying to drive Twitter's price down so he could get out of the deal or buy the company for less. The lawsuit seeks to hold Musk accountable for the loss in Twitter's stock value due to the alleged manipulative behavior.
