The Redwood City City Council reported that the request of several civil coalitions to have a proposed rent control resolution on the November ballot has been rejected for not having the required number of signatures.

Thus, this Monday, July 8, the San Mateo County Elections Office reported that it completed the verification of more than 6,000 signatures of a community petition to impose additional rent control and just cause eviction limits in Redwood City.

"The petition did not reach the number of signatures required for the initiative to meet the requirements for inclusion on the November 2024 electoral ballot," he said in a brief statement.

The text states that the proponents presented the petition to the municipal clerk on May 21, 2024, and after conducting a preliminary count of the signatures on the petition, the municipal clerk determined that the petition met the requirements to be submitted to a signature verification review by the San Mateo County Elections Office.

After a thorough review of each signature, he said, the County Elections Office determined that many of the petition signers were not registered voters within the jurisdiction of Redwood City.

In this regard, the municipal secretary issued a notice of insufficiency to the proponents of the petition this July 8. However, the city council stressed, no further action by the city is planned.

The civil coalitions presented 6,395 voter signatures to the Redwood City clerk with the idea of seeking to keep the city affordable, diverse and vibrant for those who live, work or study in it.

Bay Area Faith in Action leaders and community partners said the proposal would seek to limit rent increases to a reasonable amount so residents could focus on making ends meet without fear of their rent going up. each year, while ensuring a fair return for family owners.
