A dog died in a house fire near Redwood City early Wednesday morning, according to the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

Crews responded at 12:50 p.m. to a fire reported at 560 Beresford Ave., a home in an unincorporated part of San Mateo County.

The flames were initially on the back terrace of the house, but spread inside. All residents escaped unharmed and firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent homes, but the family dog was killed, fire department officials said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Fire department officials said the property was valued at $3.2 million and the fire caused more than $1.2 million in damage.
