Redwood City police are clearing up what they say may be misinformation about robberies at a large store in the city, the department said Monday.
According to police, a series of recent social media posts allege that seven robberies have occurred in recent weeks at a Redwood City Costco on Middlefield Road.
Authorities noted that they have not received any reports of thefts at that store during that time period. However, they have received reports of other thefts that occurred in the Costco parking lot, they said.
On August 11, another woman approached another woman and gave her a fake gold necklace; while doing so, the suspect actually stole her real gold necklace. The victim only realized her necklace had been stolen after she got home, police said.
On Thursday, a woman walked up to a man and kissed him on the cheek. Shortly after, the victim realized that the suspect had stolen her necklace, they said.
Police are investigating both cases.
The public is encouraged to be mindful of their belongings when approached by strangers. Police also stressed that there is a common scam, often targeting the elderly, in which suspects approach victims with an offer of free jewelry while actually stealing it.
Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the Redwood City Police Tip Line at (650) 780-7110.
