A Novato, California, man was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime after he allegedly fought with his neighbor over a parking space and threatened to report him to authorities for allegedly being undocumented.
Police were called to the Olive Avenue area Tuesday for a report of a neighborhood dispute. A man said his neighbor threatened to shoot him over a disagreement over access to a parking space. He also alleged that the neighbor threatened to notify the U.S. government that he was in the country illegally, which police said was an assumption based on the man's race.
Following an investigation, police arrested Douglas Shannon, 64, on suspicion of committing a hate crime.
Officers also allege they found a registered and legally owed firearm at Shannon's residence, which he turned over to police. However, no weapon was used during the incident, police clarified.
However, a gun violence restraining order was issued temporarily prohibiting Shannon from possessing firearms as a result of this case, Novato police said.
