The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a resolution increasing the base pay for regular city employees to $30 an hour.
The measure aims to align wages with what a task force determined to be a "living wage" which considers benefits received by County employees, among other factors.
?Each of our county employees contributes greatly to the work we do to serve our residents. “As a county of immense wealth, this is a great step to value all of our employees and ensure that they can continue living in our county,” said the supervisor. ??Noelia Corzo.
The resolution, passed 5-0, immediately increases the base pay of eight workers in two classifications, Office Assistant I and Medical Services Assistant I. Additionally, the departments are increasing salaries by $30 per hour for 71 employees in all classifications. whose current salary levels are below that amount.
And, due to the high cost of living, the County convened a working group to determine the base salary that a city council worker would need in a two-income household with one child.
That way, they arrived at $29.76 an hour, rounded to $30, by evaluating the cost of food, child care, health care, housing, transportation, taxes and other costs.
The estimated cost of monthly benefits and salary to adjust the Office Assistant I and Medical Services Assistant I classifications to a flat rate of $30 per hour is $1,319 or $15,830 per year.
The estimated cost of monthly benefits and salary for the phased adjustments is $27,235, or $326,827 per year.
The council stressed that the pay increases do not affect extra help classifications, which provide temporary employment.
