It will be later this April that the new San Mateo County Boating Center, the first multi-story prefab modular shelter project in the nation, will open its doors with 240 temporary living spaces for singles and couples.
Located east of the 101 Freeway off Maple Street, the Navigation Center will provide intensive counseling and other support services.
The complete facility will include private bedrooms, shared bathrooms/showers, dining services and support modules, as well as outdoor areas for activities.
This new center is intended to meet the county's goal of zero functional homelessness, which means shelter can be accessed by anyone who wants shelter through a variety of county facilities and programs.
The total cost of the Navigation Center is $57 million, with a $46.1 million Homekey grant from the State of California for construction.
In addition, a donation of 5 million dollars was received from philanthropist John Sobrato; and a $500,000 federal grant secured by Congresswoman Jackie Speier. To this were added multiple donations from labor unions.
LifeMoves has been awarded a five-year contract to operate the Navigation Center; in addition to the fact that there are contracts with multiple service providers for physical and mental health, dental, employment and other services.
For this, there is a grant of 9.2 million dollars from Homekey for these operations.
