Several California colleges return to online classes

With an increase in infections of the Omicron variant in California and concerns about the spread of the virus, some of the UC system's campuses are returning to online classes after the holidays.

UCLA along with six other campuses announced Tuesday that they will return virtually. The UC system also announced that all 10 campuses will be requiring proof of the booster shot.

The emergence of this new and fast-moving variant, coupled with student travel to and from campus and the prevalence of holiday gatherings, will make our facilities a unique set of public health challenges as we enter the new year," said Michael V. Drake, president of the UC system.

In addition to UCLA, Irvine, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara have announced a two-week delay before returning in January.

The CSU system has no plans yet to return to online education but will be monitoring the situation as USC is also contemplating it as a possibility and that proof of the booster shot would be a requirement for a return.
