The County Board of Supervisors will consider civilian oversight of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office at a specially called meeting on Tuesday, October 24.
The study session is held at the request of the president of the board, Dave Pine, and the vice president of the board, Warren Slocum.
In a statement, the Board of Supervisors said that no official action will be taken, however, it may provide staff with instructions for future meetings or actions.
The study session will take place at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Room, located at 400 County Center, in Redwood City. The public can provide comments in person and virtually, and live Spanish interpretation will be available.
The objective of the study session, local authorities stated, is to provide the Board with information on the relationships between community policing, existing and civilian oversight, and the variety of models or forms that oversight can take.
Given this, local and national experts, advocacy groups and representatives of law enforcement have been invited to speak.
The agenda includes presentations by the San Mateo County Sheriff, Christina Corpus, and representatives from the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and their Communities, Stanford University, National Civilian Oversight Association for Law Enforcement, Coalition for a Safer San Mateo County, County Attorney's Office, the Association of San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff, and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Sergeants Organization.
