Warren SlocumSan Mateo County Supervisor, representing Redwood City, North Fair Oaks, Menlo Park and East Palo Alto, called for the reception of Ukrainian refugees who have sought asylum on U.S. soil due to the Russian invasion of their country.

"San Diego County is preparing to welcome them. I ask San Mateo County to make similar plans on behalf of humanity," Slocum wrote on his Twitter account.

Just this week, San Diego County reported that it is preparing to receive Ukrainian refugees displaced by the war in their country.

"Our county has gone out of its way time and time again to help refugees and this time is no different. Along with Los Angeles and Sacramento, we are the largest metropolitan regions in California expected to accept these refugees," Nathan Fletcher, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, said at the time in a statement.

Just this Thursday, President Joseph Biden announced that the U.S. would accept 100,000 Ukrainian refugees and others fleeing Russian aggression through the full range of legal avenues, including the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

"We are working to expand and develop new programs focused on welcoming Ukrainians who have family members in the United States," Biden said in a statement issued by the White House.

The announcement specifies that the United States and the European Union are coordinating closely to ensure that efforts and other forms of humanitarian admissions or transfers are complementary and provide much-needed support to the Ukrainians.

While there are no precise figures on how many Ukrainian refugees might arrive in San Diego County, Fletcher assured that they are already preparing to provide them with adequate support.

"As we recognize that the County may begin to receive refugees from Ukraine, I want to make it clear that we stand ready to continue to work with our Resettlement Agency partners to welcome them into our communities," the official noted.

The response to Slocum's appeal is expected to come this coming week from San Mateo County, however, so far there is no position.
