Telegram Messenger - a private messaging service - is taking a step forward and is closing "channels", public chat groups with an ultra-right-wing faction where neo-Nazism and belief in QAnon are promoted. This is mainly to prevent the organization of groups in the US against Joe Biden's presidential transition.
In addition, it was recently revealed that WhatsApp Messenger - Facebook's competition to Telegram - added new terms and conditions where users' information is compromised. This has forced many users to download Telegram Messenger as an alternative to WhatsApp for those who can't use a more robust instant messaging protocol like Apple's iMessage.
In the last few days, Telegram Messenger was reported to have suddenly added 25 million new users.
This action is made known after the social network Twitter to suspend 70,000 accounts permanently on Monday night for fear of dispersal or incitement to violence caused by conspiracy theories such as QAnon.
Since last week, managers of the different social networks have responded against violence, with the exception of Parler -a social network similar to Twitter without security filters-, which was forced to close due to its inefficient work to filter hate messages.
Telegram, then, joins mass broadcasting platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram in avoiding future acts of violence such as those that took place last Wednesday, January 6th.when the outgoing president of the United States Donald Trump, addressed a message who rallied crowds to storm the Capitol.
It should be noted that most social networks have turned their backs on the current U.S. president, the last of them to suspend his official account was Snapchat.
In recent days, the U.S. has faced intense debate ahead of the inauguration day of President-elect Joe Biden, with fears that social media will serve as a breeding ground for hate groups that promote discrimination, racism and thus increase the likelihood of an armed and violent protest on January 20, the day the transition of power is scheduled to take place.
