Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced that the passage of Russian gas through the country's territory via old Soviet-era gas pipelines will be closed in the first minutes of 2025.
This is because the transit agreement for hydrocarbons from Russia, which represented approximately half of that country's total exports to Europe, expired, and both countries in conflict since 2022 have not been able to reach an agreement.
"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas. This is a historic event. Russia is losing its markets and will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made the decision to abandon Russian gas," the minister said in statements reported by the Reuters news agency.
For its part, the Russian company Gazprom issued a statement confirming the interruption of the supply of natural gas passing through pipelines located in Ukraine, which has led to losses of up to 7 billion dollars, according to the statement.
