California's COVID-19 rental assistance application website is live starting Monday, helping eligible landlords and tenants cover unpaid rent from the past.

Funding for the support comes from California's $2.6 billion in federal rental support from the U.S. Department of the Treasury's emergency rental assistance program.

The application for California tenants and homeowners is available at https://housing.ca.gov/covid_rr/.

While some counties or cities have their own application portal to administer rental assistance, Russ Heimerich, a spokesman for the California Housing, Consumer and Business Services Agency, said that applications can be made on any portal. The California state website directs people to the appropriate website by city or county.

Eligible landlords and tenants can request a refund of 80 percent of the tenant's outstanding rent between January 1 and December 31, 2020.
