Soundtrack

By Pablo Lock. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P]

I don't know when I started planning our trips and when they ended up being like this, so different, so unique, so ours. I think it was after the third or fourth trip or suddenly when I started to have that feeling that our vacations ended early as soon as we arrived at our destination.

What I am sure of is that our holidays began weeks before, from the moment I started planning. Long before the date I began to consider different options, although what I was doing was simply delaying our arrival at our destination. I took absurd, elliptical, senseless routes in order to delay our arrival.

Many times we went in the opposite direction to our destination, trying to cross that river where gold seekers used to camp, we detoured to see a sunset on that hidden beach or to cross that great national park we went away from the route.

The truth is that I was very happy on those trips where at the same time as I was driving I was telling them real or fictional stories, I was telling them about the books I had read, the movies I had seen and although my versions often did not resemble the originals, I managed to capture their attention and kept them captivated while they tried to guess the outcome.

And as we began to travel through valleys, cross deserts, climb peaks, and visit ghost towns, I announced my next story. And although my audience often disagreed with the twists and turns of the stories, and even less so with the endings, I never gave in to their requests to amend the plot.

And all those stories were of course accompanied by our background music. And of course, music was also part of the trip planning. I tried to select different types of music for each trip: pop, rock, boleros, some classical music, but the song that could not be missed was one that for some reason was always present, a nostalgic song that without saying much told us so much. An unmissable song without intending to. A song that perhaps evoked different things in us but that in the end united us.

That song revealed to me the reason for my trip, but not just one of my vacation trips, but the reason for my great trip, the reason for the trip of my life, the great trip that had changed the destiny of our lives, a trip that began 20 years ago, a trip with no return, whose destination we continued to build as we moved forward.

And now, listening to that song again, as the one my daughter chose for her graduation, I couldn't help but remember our trips, long for those moments, reminisce about “the trip” and feel again how good it was to be there, inside the car, driving, discovering destinations, telling stories, writing history.

Camp Doza; an unparalleled summer camp in East Palo Alto

Encouraging coexistence with animals: a fundamental part of Camp Doza

Forward! Forward! The struggle is constant! This was one of the many slogans that the people, the worthy people, chanted enthusiastically.

After a long journey from New York City to the state capital, Albany, the people arrived together with those brothers in struggle who carried out the walk, to continue demanding the right to unemployment insurance, a fund for excluded workers and health insurance.

At the rally site to start the march, while the leaders were organizing the order of the contingents, a citizen exercised her right to safety by calling on the police to stop the unusual mobilization.

With drums, improvised trumpets, string instruments and a wind band that was in the middle of the organizations, they showed the jubilation of the organized people.

Photo: Yogi Ariza

Some of the comrades were timid at first, while others danced and chanted, but the march gradually turned into a festive struggle. The hidden bridge became the scene of a struggle of the people and, arriving between the buildings, we soon saw the imposing building where Governor Hochul works. What was surprising were the strategically placed metal fences, as a warning that this building was not accessible to the working people who had to work hard to get there. But in a symbolic and improvised way, the speakers repeated the requests again and again at the foot of a statue and the park soon became welcoming.

But that was not all: the march continued on its route and suddenly we came across fragile glass doors that were secured. The contingent was still able to enter through a narrow door and once again the people embraced their struggle through the speakers, inside the building where the lords of souls and grey hats no longer let us advance.

The villages, always respectful, protested again. The band was ready and the comrades from the Transnational Village Network were happy to have achieved their goal.

As a farewell, the band came out playing “El son del coyotito.”

11 journalists have been murdered in Mexico so far in 2022

murders of journalists in Mexico

Illustration Hans Leguízamo.

The journalistic community in Mexico is in mourning. The country has become the most dangerous place to practice any kind of journalism without being in a state of war. From January 1 to date, 11 journalists have been murdered in Mexico.

Just this Monday, May 9, two murders of journalists were reported in Mexico, Yesenia Mollinedo Falconi and Sheila Johana Garcia Olivera, both - director and reporter, respectively - part of the portal "El Veraz" which is located in the state of Veracruz.

According to police reports, the journalists were shot dead while they were in a car outside a convenience store in Cosoleacaque, Veracruz.

As in other cases of journalists murdered in this state, the Veracruz Attorney General's Office said it has opened an investigation file to clarify the facts.

Just four days before the double murder, on Thursday, May 5, in the north of the country, in Culiacán, Sinaloa, the body of the analyst and political columnist, Luis Enrique Ramirez Ramos was found dead.

The founding director of the news site Credible Sources, was found on the morning of May 5 on a dirt road that runs from Mexico Highway 15 to Campestre Las Nanchis, in Culiacán, Sinaloa. He was wrapped in plastic. He had been kidnapped outside his home the day before. Ramírez Ramos was a journalist, analyst and political columnist, as well as a writer. His work was widely known in that state.

It seems that the attackers know that there is total impunity in the country, as violence against journalists does not stop despite calls from national and foreign organizations that have made clear the seriousness of the murders of journalists in Mexico.

In addition to the three murders of journalists in Mexico in the last week, there are eight more.

Jose Luis Gamboa Arenas He was stabbed to death on January 10 in the state of Veracruz. According to authorities, the crime could have been due to an alleged assault. Gamboa was the founder and editor of the news portal Inforegio, where he addressed security issues, as well as being one of the founders and editors of the digital media La Noticia.

Margarito Esquivel Martinez He was shot dead outside his home in Tijuana, Baja California, just 7 days after Gamboa. The photojournalist focused on security and police-related stories for Semanario Zeta and Grupo Cadena, and his work was published by international media outlets such as the BBC.

As if it were a cruel joke, seven days after Margarito's death, she was murdered journalist shot Lourdes Maldonado, once again in Tijuana. "I fear for my life," she said to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador during the morning press conference held at the National Palace, as she had received threats. Five days later she was shot when she arrived at her home, where she died.

The last day of January, Roberto Toledo, a contributor to the Monitor Michoacán portal, was gunned down as he left his office in Zitácuaro, Michoacán. Despite maintaining a low profile, as he had already received threats for his journalistic work, he was killed. The presidential spokesman, Jesús Ramírez, condemned the murder, however, he pointed out that Toledo was not a journalist but an assistant at the office where he was killed. Statements that outraged a profession fed up with injustice and attacks on its work from the presidential "pulpit."

February did not open any better, and the murders of journalists in Mexico continued on February 10, Heber Lopez, director of the Noticias Web portal, was shot dead upon arriving at his home in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. López, 39, had been working as a journalist for 18 years, especially covering issues of corruption and security, which earned him several threats.

14 days later, on February 24, Jorge Camero Zazueta, director of the El Informativo website, was shot to death inside a gym he regularly attended in Cajeme, Sonora. The crime occurred just two weeks after he resigned from his position as private secretary to the mayor of Empalme, Sonora, Luis Fuentes Aguilar, and resumed his journalistic activities on the website he created.

The first victim of March was Juan Carlos Muniz, a police reporter for the digital media outlet Testigo Minero, who was shot dead on March 4 in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, inside his vehicle, which he used both to travel to his reporting and to provide taxi services.

619 kilometers away from that murder, on March 15, Armando Linares, a reporter for the news portal Monitor Michoacán, was shot dead inside his home in Zitácuaro, Michoacán. On January 31 of this year, Linares had requested security measures from the Federal Government Protection Mechanism due to various threats against him, but these were denied on the grounds that he was not a journalist.

From this media outlet located in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, we deeply condemn the murders of Mexican journalists who seek to freely and safely carry out their journalistic work in Mexico, while, as fellow citizens, we demand that the government clarify, resolve and exercise the full weight of the law against those who took the lives of these and all the murdered journalists.

We also demand that all reporters, photographers, cameramen, writers, editors and other journalistic positions be protected by the State, because, although our media is focused on the Latino community in California, we have collaborators who carry out their work in Mexico and today their integrity is compromised.

Writing what can't be named: sexual abuse from the literary perspective

0

I have recently read three novels—two of them autofiction—that deal with child sexual abuse. In all three, the abuser was an adult male and the victim was a girl or teenager.

Before I go any further, I must warn you that I was not looking for books dealing with this topic, but that they came to me by chance; in fact, if you only read their titles it is very difficult to know what they are about. This leads me to think that, unfortunately, sexual abuse against minors is a crime that occurs, almost always with total impunity, throughout the world, but that more women, sometimes until they reach adulthood and fully understand what happened to them, are reporting it. And that is always a good thing, because the search for justice is the first step towards healing.

I will write about each of them as they arrive: the first one is called Why did you come back every summer? (2018, Lumen; 2022, Palindrome), and in it its author, the Argentine Belén López Peiró (Buenos Aires, 1992) recounts those terrible summer holidays during which, from the age of 13 to 17, her uncle-in-law abused her when he came to visit, as well as the legal battle she had to undertake to prove that, although he only penetrated her with his fingers, what her uncle - who by the way was a policeman - was doing to her was raping her. It is a text in which the author changes her narrative voice (sometimes in the first person, other times using different narrators who tell their own version of the events) and also uses transcriptions of the testimonies of the witnesses in the court file to weave the plot of the crime that marked her adolescence and her relationships with men for some time.

Why you came back every summer. Belén López Peiró

In the second novel, The girl from the ice floe (Anagrama, 2021), the French actress and writer Adélaïde Bon (Paris, 1981) tells how for years she mistreated her body with blows, painful masturbation, alcohol and drug use until she was able to unlock from her subconscious the sexual abuse she suffered as a seven-year-old girl by an unknown adult. The stairs of the building in an upper-class neighborhood in Paris where she lived with her family were the scene of the abuse in which a middle-aged Italian immigrant who posed as someone who was going to fix his neighbor's bicycle forced her to perform oral sex on him and inserted his fingers into her vagina. Bon tells how the trial against this man, with the girls who, like her, were his victims now being adult women, helped her heal and stop punishing her body.

The Girl from the Ice Floe. Adélaïde Bon

Finally, it came into my hands The summer of the snake (Alfaguara, 2022), the only one of the three novels that I will comment on in this space that is not autofiction, but pure and simple literary fiction, even with some fantasy, but that does not make it any less shocking or deal with the issue of sexual abuse any less seriously. The author, the narrator, essayist, poet and academic Cecilia Eudave (Guadalajara, 1953), uses both the images of the snake and of a female ghost to tell the story of a summer in 1977, when a little girl, Ana, was abused by a neighbor, who asked her to caress his penis while making her believe that it was a boa that “got up” because it was happy with his caresses, and that the “white poison” it released would not hurt her.

The summer of the snake. Cecilia Eudave

When a minor suffers sexual abuse, he or she needs a lot of therapy, care and attention to try to heal, as far as possible, the wound that an event of this nature leaves in the body, in self-esteem, in the psyche and therefore in the way of relating to others. As I wrote at the beginning of this text, I am glad that more and more women are reporting. And that literature, as a timely reflection of what happens in each era with humanity, is recording this.

U.S. crosses 1 million COVID-19 deaths, Biden laments figure

million COVID-19 deaths

Makerspace, a new space with activities in Spanish at Redwood City Library

Photo: P360P

By Pamela Cruz and Constanza Mazzotti
The countdown has begun for the June 7 primary election, where voters will be able to cast their votes on candidates for U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, comptroller and treasurer, so it's important to know all the candidates in San Mateo County.

As well as Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, State Board of Equalization member, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, U.S. Representative to Congress, State Senator, State Assemblyman, and other local candidates.

The latter are no less important, so here is a list of candidates in San Mateo County.

Superintendent of Schools for San Mateo County

In this case, the only contender for the post is Nancy Magee, a gay woman originally from San Mateo County who lives in Half Moon Bay and has 38 years of experience in education.

Magee earned the position of San Mateo County school superintendent in 2018, so he is going for his second term.

In the next term, Nancy wants to focus resources on deeper supports for students with disabilities and those identified as English learners; hire a diverse educational workforce at all levels of service to better reflect the diversity of San Mateo County students; and provide leadership in achieving social, racial, and environmental justice for area schools and communities.

In turn, according to her platform, she seeks to strengthen digital infrastructure, educator training, and the curriculum to ensure that students have access to digital learning tools and accelerated and independent learning opportunities. To learn more about Nancy Magee and her proposals, you can visit the website www.vote4nancy2022.org/.

Member for the Board of Supervisors

To learn more about her campaign, those interested can visit the website www.noelia4smc.org/.

Charles Stone

She notes that the biggest threat facing the region, including District 2, is devastating climate change: the increased risk of wildfires, drought and pollution in the bay, so sustainability is among her priorities. To learn more about this and her other proposals, voters can visit her website. www.stoneforsupervisor.org.

Cameron Rolfe

He does not have a website that voters can visit to learn about his political platform, however, he has made clear, in interviews with the media, his position on various issues such as health, housing budget and climate change, pointing out that to make progress on them, multi-jurisdictional collaboration is necessary.

For the seat in the Third District of the Board of Supervisors

Laura Parmer-Lohan

District Attorney and Treasurer-Tax Collector

The ballot only has Stephen Wagstaffe running for San Mateo County District Attorney, while Sandie Arnott is the only one to win the Treasurer and Tax Collector position again.

San Mateo County Sheriff

The position of head of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is being contested by two people, the current Sheriff, Carlos Bolaños, and the current Millbrae Police Chief, Christina Corpus, both with extensive experience in law and security matters, so the race is close.

To learn more about them and their proposals, they make available the sites www.bolanosforsheriff.com ‒Carlos Bolanos‒, www.christinacorpus.com ‒Christina Corpus‒, where voters will be able to delve into their stories and experiences, as well as actions taken and proposals to improve security in San Mateo County.

Redwood City to seek to charge sewer service on property tax bill

sewer service on tax bill

If the tax bill sewer collection process is approved, the city plans to implement it in phases.

Redwood City seeks to join other San Mateo County cities that collect sewer service charges on tax bills, such as North Fair Oaks.
