San Mateo County Pauses J&J Vaccine Due to Isolated Reaction Cases

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

San Mateo County on Tuesday paused administration of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine after six isolated cases of people nationwide developed a reaction to the immunization within days of receiving the inoculation.

"With the announcement by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of concerns about cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in combination with low blood platelet levels in a small number of recipients of the Janssen-Johnson & Johnson vaccine, San Mateo County Health is pausing the use of the Janssen vaccine in all of its operations."

This was reported by Dr. Anand Chabra, Chief of COVID-19 vaccination in San Mateo County, who in a statement said the local Health Department ordered its vaccination partners, including local hospitals and clinics, to suspend use of the Janssen vaccine until it is officially approved by the CDC/FDA.

Prior to the announcement of the J&J vaccine pause, a total of 564,367 COVID-19 vaccine injections have been administered in San Mateo County by County Health, health care providers and hospitals, pharmacies, community clinics and other partners.

Of the total, 22,306 injections are of the Janssen vaccine, representing 3,952 percent of the total vaccines administered in San Mateo County, the others being Pfizer and Moderna immunizations.

"County Health and its providers have used more than 5,700 doses of Janssen in community and mass vaccination events for all eligible residents, for homeless and homebound populations, and in other settings," the document states.

San Mateo County Health received 500 doses from Janssen this week, which will be held pending further state and federal guidance, officials said.

They also said that community clinics with planned use of Janssen will be switched to Pfizer or Moderna, and other initiatives using J&J immunization will be reevaluated, including vaccination of homebound residents, patients discharged from hospitals, and new stockpiles in correctional facilities.

While the county had some specific events planned with J&J this week, these may be swapped out for Pfizer and Moderna doses so that those events can still take place in the same number of inoculations as planned.

San Mateo County is joined by at least three other San Francisco Bay Area counties - Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin - which also announced they would temporarily suspend use of the vaccine, developed by J&J's pharmaceutical subsidiary, Janssen.

The state Department of Public Health also issued a statement today, urging a temporary pause in administration of the vaccine while state and federal officials determine whether the clotting incidents are significant.

Nationwide, more than 6.8 million doses of Janssen's vaccine have been administered nationwide.

Health officials have confirmed cases of rare and serious blood clots in just six women aged 18 to 48 who received the J&J vaccine, with symptoms appearing six to 13 days after vaccination.

Both the CDC and the FDA have advised states to suspend administration of the Janssen vaccine to allow for an investigation of the clots to determine if a causal link to the vaccine can be established.

In light of the isolated cases, health officials have asked anyone who recently received the Janssen inoculation and has symptoms such as severe headaches, leg pain and shortness of breath to contact a health care provider as soon as possible.

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs grow by millions of dollars despite COVID-19

Entrepreneurs making billions of dollars amass more capital as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds in Silicon Valley.

millions of dollars
Christian Carlos. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

The international press and organizations such as the World Bank point to a phenomenon focused on multi-billion dollar companies that, unlike the working class, along with the owners of small and medium-sized businesses, did not resist the onslaught of two waves of SARS-CoV-2 infections; however, multi-billion dollar companies are amassing more capital as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds.

The COVID-19 disease was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020 -more than a year ago-. This meant extreme measures of care in the population, which led to stop large-scale economic activities; which, in turn, resulted in unemployment, hyperinflation, instability in the stock market and, more recently, exports.

For a while, it was believed that Asian countries would be the first to see the strongest effects of the pandemic because the focus of SARS infection-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19-was found in the central city of Wuhan, China, an economic giant in Asia; however, the Asian economy began to recover rapidly during Q3 of 2020.

Meanwhile, economists early on predicted rising unemployment rates, business closures and the bankruptcy of small and medium-sized companies, which ended up happening in Europe - mainly in the UK, France, Spain and Italy - in Q3 2020. The same scenario was on the horizon for the Americas in Q4 2020.

Recently, Business Insider points out that billionaires increased their capital by 44 percent, while 80 million Americans lost their jobs - a figure as of February 2021. Notably, according to the report, just over 600 people have a fortune of more than $1 billion.

Most of the world's largest companies are not only headquartered in the U.S., but are located in the heart of Silicon Valley, which seemed "immune" to the effects of the new coronavirus.

Jeff Bezos, creator and CEO of Amazon, increased his fortune by 79 percent during the pandemic; that is, 90 billion dollars; with this, several media estimate that his net worth is around 200 billion dollars.

He is followed by Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, who recently invested in Bitcoins -cryptocurrency founded in January 2009-, increased his net worth by 277 percent; that is, during the pandemic, his capital increased by more than 68 billion dollars.

Despite the criticism that Facebook has received in the last two years due to its lack of privacy practices, the co-founder and CEO of the social network, Mark Zuckerberg, increased his fortune by 85 percent; that is, 46 billion dollars more before the pandemic by COVID-19, totaling approximately 101 billion dollars.

While Daniel Gilbert is a real estate mogul, it should be noted that the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers increased his fortune by more than 656 percent, leaving him with an estimated total of $49.2 billion.

Mackenzie Scott, who owns 4 percent of Amazon's stock, saw his fortune increase by more than 82 percent when the company's stock cost more than $3,400 in Q4 2020, giving him a total, after the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, of $65 billion.

Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO and owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, saw his fortune begin to grow in the midst of the pandemic by just over 42 percent, leaving him with an estimated net worth of $75 billion.

People who managed to keep their jobs are being forced to work remotely - telecommuting - so cloud platforms are becoming increasingly popular. And so capitalized the co-founder and CEO of California-based Oracle Corporation, which grew more than 36 percent during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic; its net worth is estimated at more than $80 billion.

After Bill Gates disposed of most of his shares, he eventually kept 1 percent of Microsoft's stock; however, a $20 billion increase - that's 20 percent - leaves his net worth at an estimated $118 billion.

Alphabet, Inc., a subsidiary of Google, had an important growth during the worst months of the COVID-19 pandemic; this was reflected in the fortunes of Larry Page -CEO- and Sergey Brin -co-founder-, whose average increase was 37 percent, which means that both saw their capital increase by 19 billion dollars; both have a net fortune estimated at 140 billion dollars.

As you can see, the tech giants - Amazon, Google, Facebook - did not suffer the effects of the pandemic, unlike the tens of millions of Americans who lost their jobs a year after the health emergency began.

Economists, however, could not predict that they would encounter a 270 percent-plus increase - as in the case of Elon Musk - in the fortunes of the already billionaires. Nor could they have predicted the independence of stocks like $GME -GameStop - to the hands of individual shareholders, which would cause a clear instability on Wall Street. And finally, the Bitcoin fever, which is positioned, for the third time, as the cryptocurrency of choice after having the backing of Tesla and Elon Musk.

But foreign companies such as Sony, Nintendo and Samsung, begin to go through difficult periods as a result of telework: the overdemand of semiconductors; and, on the other hand, Apple -giant of American origin-, has cornered the market of the same to prepare the launches of its products scheduled for Q4 2021.

While internet services are, in a way, unlimited, the electronics to carry out these tasks are about to become limited access goods due to the shortage of semiconductors. This would explain, for example, the null availability of recent generation video game consoles manufactured by Sony: the PlayStation 5, whose price is set at 399 and 499 dollars, but whose processing capacity is not precisely to run video games, but is used as a cheap way to mine different cryptocurrencies.

The phenomenon of why companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook remained on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic is explained by the migration to telecommuting and, with it, the transfer of many people's lifestyles to their homes, which led to increased consumption of internet-connected goods and services.

Redwood City Holds Successful Sunday "Vaccination Clinic

Fernando arrived at 8 a.m. and was one of the first participants to receive the first vaccination as part of a "Vaccination Clinic" held last Sunday at the Mural Parking Lot in Redwood City in San Mateo County.

The vaccination day secured nearly 200 doses for Redwood City residents and is part of an effort between Dignity Health, Sequoia Hospital and Casa Circulo Culturalfrom a community perspective to slow the spread of COVID-19 and allow people to spend time with loved ones or work," according to Dr. Dieter Bruno, Sequoia Hospital's chief medical officer.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a great impact and Fernando's case has been no exception; Fernando is a construction and restaurant worker and, although he has not been sick, his work has been affected, since materials have gone up in price, which has made it difficult to send the economic support he usually sends to his parents in Morelos, Mexico, according to his testimony.

Casa Círculo Cultural, led by Verónica Escámez, is a very well integrated group in their community that, thanks to the support of San Mateo County, in October 2020, began their partnership with Dignity Health, Sequoia Hospital to conduct COVID-19 testing, and "because of the good organization in conducting the tests, they decided to undertake in Redwood City this first of 7 that they have scheduled throughout the North Fair Oaks region," commented Dr. Bruno.

The Vaccination Clinic started at 10 am with the participation of about 35 volunteers, including medical staff, nurses and Casa Círculo Cultural distributed in 6 registration tables, 6 for vaccination and a monitoring tent to address possible reactions to the vaccine, and although it was scheduled to end at 3 pm, it ended half an hour earlier than scheduled because the vaccines were finished, as there were no barriers of any kind to prevent the participation of people.

According to Dr. Bruno, the protocol for the Vaccination Clinic was based on California Department of Public Health guidelines that took into account their health history and checked that their system was not immunosuppressed, did not suffer from lung disease, diabetes, etc., all in order to provide the greatest safety and confidence to get vaccinated.

Julian Edelman Says Goodbye to the NFL: A Legend Formed in Redwood City

The New England Patriots wide receiver decided to hang up his uniform after the Foxborough team cut him this afternoon after he failed physical tests.

BY MIGUEL ENRÍQUEZ

Gratitude to the legends in sport is less and less valued every day. The great athletes who spend their entire career in a team, despite the bucks from other places, the losing streaks or how little they can play, are endangered species and today one more has decided to put an end to his career.

While it is true that Julian Edelman contemplated a possible retirement since last season, when his friend and passer, Tom Brady, left to play for the champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now it has become a reality that the step aside that gave the born in Redwood City, California.

The "Squirrel," as the 34-year-old former player is also known, forged the dynasty that led the Patriots to become the winningest team in history. NFLEdelman has been a part of three of the six championships the Northland franchise has won. As recently as 2019, Edelman signed a two-season extension and more than 15 million dollars, now with his departure, the salary cap will have a cushion of 3.5 million for the blue and red.

In 2009, he began his adventure in the American football league, when he was drafted as quarterback of the Kent State UniversityHowever, he changed his position as he was demonstrating his skills as a receiver; the California native commented on his social networks that the decision to retire comes from thinking about family and the injury that kept him away from the field last season, the same one that still can not recover one hundred percent.

Julian Edelman will be able to collect, despite retirement, more than two million dollars, because the collective bargaining agreement for NFL players says that athletes cut for failing physicals, will have a kind of insurance to ensure their departure on good terms.

Juan Soldado, the Saint of Migrants

Juan Soldado sounds alongside Santa Muerte or Malverde as a "saint" to whom the needy pray. He is the patron saint of the desperate who want to cross to the other side but cannot: the Saint of the Migrants..

Juan Soldado
Robert Diaz (@betistofeles). Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

Thousands of men and women have died in the strangest ways for refusing to renounce their faith - whatever their worship - and the manner of their death has determined their subsequent worship or malediction.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, who became a bishop and held the curia for 40 years, was thrown to the lions who devoured him alive. St. Blaise was flayed with an iron comb and then beheaded. St. Dorothea, on her way to the scaffold, told those attending her execution that, where she was going, there was neither cold nor winter. A mocking young man told her, then, after she was dead and as proof, to send him a basket of flowers to prove the eternal spring in which she would live. The following year, he received the basket and that impressed young man also converted to Christianity and died as a martyr, his name was Saint Theophilus.

Juan Castillo Morales shares this unjust way of dying - or so it has been said - to save his name from the oblivion in which his detractors have wanted to put him. He sounds, along with Santa Muerte or Malverde, like a saint to whom the needy pray. Juan Soldado is the patron saint of the desperate who want to cross to the other side but cannot. He is the Saint of the Migrants.

In the voice of chronicler Juan Garibay, Juan Castillo Morales was a soldier from Oaxaca who on February 13, 1938 was at the headquarters of the barracks on Callejón Z between 2nd and 3rd, almost on the corner of F in Tijuana, Baja California.

There was a little girl who lived on Second Street, Olga Camacho Martínez, who used to pass by there on her way to the store and would come to the command to run errands for which the soldiers paid her "piloncito". One day, when Juan had a fight with his wife, the girl passed by the place and Juan was drunk and presumably a mariguano, he wanted to take the girl by force and killed her.

After committing the murder, he took her body out of the window and carried her to a shop opposite the garrison where he dismembered her and put her in a toolbox. Her uniform was covered in blood. He went home and told his wife -when she saw him arrive full of blood-: "because of you, look what I did", because of the effect of the drunkenness he was carrying, he fell asleep.

It was at that moment that the wife took the bloodstained clothes to the commander's office. The police went after the soldier even though the girl had not been reported missing. A group of neighbors began the search until they found, by the blood marks on the walls, the soldier's house where they found the toolbox with the remains of the girl. The mother lost her sanity. The murderer accepted his guilt and regretted his crime, because he also loved the girl. The villagers wanted the soldier to be executed and although the army, at the time, defended him from being lynched, the case reached the president who asked the U.S. government to intervene and investigate the case.

An FBI agent, Ed Dieckmann, chief of typing for San Diego County, was commissioned and after a brief investigation, he would say that it had been one of the easiest cases he had ever had to solve because he had a confessed murderer, samples of the soldier's skin under the murdered girl's fingernails and also the rapist's semen in the little girl's womb.

The army sentenced him to the escape law. They took the soldier to the cemetery in the city of Tijuana and shot him there. Later, the place where the soldier fell was identified with a stone by one of the people who attended the shooting. Over time, more stones were placed in the place and, when they saw that there was a considerable mound, someone came up with the idea of grabbing an abandoned grave next to the entrance of the cemetery, it was said that the soldier had fallen there and it became a place of worship where the parishioners went and asked for miracles related to being able to pass to the other side.

If that were the only version of the legend about Juan Soldado, it is very likely that he would have gone down in history as a vile murderer; however, along with the facts already narrated, we must take into account that, at that time, Lázaro Cárdenas served as president of Mexico, who began a crusade against casinos that, at least in Tijuana, had more implications than elsewhere; a business that represented one of the main destinations for tourists and foreign visitors. The murdered girl was the daughter of one of the union leaders who had his hands in the casino business.

There were also people who claimed that the political motive for the assassination was to intimidate these unscrupulous leaders, and that the captain on duty in the military garrison forced the private to take the blame. The woman who, they said, was Juan Soldado's wife, in reality, only appeared on that occasion bringing the soldier's clothes and subsequently disappeared without a trace.

It was also strange that the scheduled execution was public, as these acts were considered by Mexican authorities to be barbaric and without legal basis. On the other hand, the execution was arranged early in the morning of February 17, 1938, so that the journalists' photos could satisfy the hunger for blood and vengeance that was falling on the soldier who had just turned 24 years old.

Juan Soldado was executed in front of more than a thousand people.

His tomb is the main attraction in Tijuana's number one municipal cemetery. Over time, her tomb has been filled with a variety of offerings: votive offerings, tombstones, candles, photographs of people who want to cross into the United States but can't, and of people involved in human trafficking. Little Olga's tomb, which was moved to another cemetery - Tijuana's number two - has been forgotten and is now known as the tomb of the forgotten girl.

Prayer to Juan Soldado

Juan Soldado

Praised be the Most Holy name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; three divine persons and one true God. Who, with His infinite and merciful power, have showered grace and miraculous indulgences on my dear brother and protector Juan Castillo Morales, in the name of Almighty God, Spirit and soul of Juan Soldado for very certain reasons, and with my heart overflowing with faith in your immediate help, I come to confide to you all the sorrows that torment me morally and materially. I do not doubt for an instant that, through your infallible intercession before the Almighty, my good desires will be fulfilled if they are convenient for the greater glory of God Our Lord and yours in particular.

As you will well realize, Juanito, my longings are devoid of captious wickedness and all I desire is to find effective support from you to silence the moral and material destitution in which I find myself plunged.

Brother John Soldier, I earnestly beg you not to abandon me with your protection in this difficult trial.

I trust in your merciful omnipotence of God and in your unfailing help promising you, from this moment, to be one more of your countless devotees. Amen.

Get the blankets and food ready! San Mateo Picnic Parks Resume Services and Expand Hours

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

As more people are being vaccinated against COVID-19 and as the opening of sites moves forward, San Mateo County parks announced that the hours of their areas will be extended in the coming weeks and many popular services will resume.

To keep these openings moving forward, rangers and park staff are counting on visitors to help keep these extended hours intact and services restored by following COVID-19 safety protocols that include keeping at least six feet away from those who do not live in the same house.

It should be noted that walk-in picnic sites remain open, however, group picnic reservations will be accepted from May 1 through June 14 in accordance with California Department of Public Health outdoor gathering guidelines and modifications, including group size, face coverings and social distancing.

Meanwhile, starting this Friday, April 16, the park hours will be extended from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, while for Saturday, May 1, the hours will be increased from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

For cycling enthusiasts, on Sunday, May 2, resumes Sunday cycling.

While on Monday, May 3, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve will reopen with modifications, including facial coverings and social distancing.

By Friday, May 28, Memorial County Park Family Camp will reopen (reservations are currently being accepted) with modifications, including face coverings and social distancing.

Remember! Starting April 15, ages 16 and older eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

While the supply of COVID-19 vaccine remains very limited and San Mateo County continues to focus on inoculating eligible individuals at local community clinics and residents of lower-income and hard-to-reach neighborhoods, beginning April 15, 16-year-old residents will be able to access their doses.

In order for these areas to access their immunization, residents should check with their primary care provider and pharmacies to make appointments.

There are currently 33 pharmacies offering vaccines in San Mateo County, including Rite Aid, Safeway/Albertsons, Costco, CVS and Walgreens, with new sites being added all the time.

"All residents, regardless of their current eligibility, can sign up for the county's notification tool to receive updates on the county's vaccine rollout," the county said in a statement.

In that regard, he explained that to make the vaccine accessible to all, the county's notification tool is available in Spanish, simplified and traditional Chinese, and Tagalog, while, through Google translator, the form is also available in several other languages.

Residents should also sign up for the state's MyTurn tool, which is also used to schedule appointments at community immunization events.

As of this morning, according to data from the Statewide Immunization Registry, California has administered 22,974,654 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, which is about 365,829 doses per day.

In the case of San Mateo County, 355,018 people have been inoculated with at least one of the 565,720 doses administered, while 231,614 people are fully immunized.

Newsom issues budget action to prevent wildfires

fire prevention
Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President Pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins - San Diego District - and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon - Lakewood District - announced a $536 million funding plan to help improve California's wildfire resiliency.

"With California facing another extremely dry year, it is critical that we get a head start on reducing our fire risk. We are doing so by investing more than $500 million in projects and programs that provide better fire prevention for all parts of California," said the California governor.

He added that key parts of the Administration's initial proposal have been supplemented with legislative ideas that will pay dividends over the years, such as increased investments in forest health projects, defensible space improvements, fire housing hardening, fire prevention grants and prevention workforce training.

He noted that the plan includes vegetation management of public and private lands, community-focused efforts for prevention and resilience, and economic stimulus for the forest economy.

"Because we know that California's wildfires are not limited to forested lands, we have turned our attention to all types of vulnerable land and vegetation, with prevention incentives that protect more residents," the officials said in a joint statement.

The $536 million funding package consists of $125 million from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Funds and $411 million from the General Fund.

Similarly, officials plan to obtain federal disaster prevention grants to match the money spent on housing rehabilitation.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement to quickly put California on the path to strong wildfire prevention, but we know more work is needed," they abounded.

On the other hand, they stressed that without the hard work of Assemblymen Richard Bloom and Phil Ting, and Senators Bob Wieckowski, Susan Rubio and Mike McGuire, among others, the plan could not have come to fruition. "We anticipate additional benefits from the 2021-2022 budget discussions."

New Video Released of Assault on Asian Community in San Francisco

Bay City News [BCN]. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

A new video released Wednesday by the San Francisco Public Defender's Office shows a man being brutally beaten by a group of people in the city's Tenderloin neighborhood, moments before the no apparent motive attack on two Asian seniors.

Steven Jenkins, 39, is accused of assaulting Ngoc Pham, 83, and Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, without cause on March 17 near Market and Seventh streets. Jenkins has since been charged with two counts each of assault, battery and elder abuse.

The assaults, which left Pham with facial fractures and Xie with black eyes, have gone viral on social media and caused outrage amid a spike in hate crimes against Asians across the country. Although investigators said they were looking into whether the attack was racially motivated, Jenkins has not been charged with a hate crime.

"We speak of two deeply troubling assaults on Asian-American seniors in our community at a time when Asian-Americans locally and nationally are suffering from escalating violence and anti-Asian racism," Jenkins' attorney, Assistant Public Defender Eric McBurney, said in a statement. "However, this situation is far more complex than it appears. Based on the facts I have reviewed, I do not believe Mr. Jenkins' actions were racially motivated."

The new surveillance video shows several people at UN Plaza attacking Jenkins, hitting him dozens of times in the head over the course of a few minutes, just before Jenkins then attacked Xie and Pham.

"On that day, Mr. Jenkins himself was the victim of an attack for no apparent reason by four unknown assailants who struck him over forty times immediately before he was seen striking Mr. Pham and Ms. Xiao. Due to the initial attack, Mr. Jenkins suffered multiple head injuries, and I believe he was in an impaired mental state±, McBurney said.

"What happened that day was out of character for him. He has no previous convictions for physically hurting anyone. He has struggled all his life on the streets, largely ignored by society. Even when he is attacked and beaten more than 40 times in broad daylight in the busy UN square, not a single person comes to his aid," he said.

The assailants who attacked Jenkins have not been identified, McBurney said.

Jenkins remains in custody and is being held without bond, according to jail records.

Fremont Crash Leaves One Dead, Two Injured

Bay City News [BCN]. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Thornton Avenue and an Interstate 880 exit ramp in Newark early Friday morning killed at least one person and seriously injured two others, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Fremont Police received emergency calls around 2:30 a.m. Friday where a crash was reported. Officers and first responders were dispatched to the intersection and found two vehicles with major damage.

A preliminary investigation determined that one vehicle was traveling westbound on Thornton Avenue and the second vehicle was traveling northbound on the exit ramp.

According to a witness interviewed by police, the vehicle exiting the freeway had a green light, while the vehicle traveling on Thornton struck it.

The two drivers and a passenger in one of the vehicles were transported to a hospital with major injuries. The passenger later died from those injuries, Fremont police said.

The identity of the passenger has not been released, as family members have not yet been notified.

Officers are still investigating the collision and believe alcohol may have been a factor.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Michael Ramsey of the Fremont Police Department's Traffic Unit at (510) 790-6776 or by email at mramsey@fremont.gov.
