Electoral measures, a necessary tool to give voice to all communities

ballot measures
Ballot measures have proven to be a powerful vehicle for voters to engage, with 75 bills introduced in state legislatures in 2023 to change rules and make the voting process more difficult for voters to move forward on issues they care about.

Ballot measures have proven to be a powerful means for voters to make decisions about improvements in healthcare, housing, voting rights, abortion rights, wages, and much more, yet there are opponents of these measures who seek to downplay their importance and value.

For many, these measures may be favorable, but they can also harm some sectors that do not benefit, so they seek to make the electoral measures lose strength and interest among the communities, while it is observed that there are efforts to restrict access to electoral measures, while increasing progress in favor of equity at the polls.

In 2023, 75 bills were introduced in state legislatures to change rules and make the voting process more difficult for voters to move forward on issues they care about. So far in 2024 alone, 103 bills have been introduced attacking the voting process, experts said during a session information carried out by Ethnic Media Services.

In this regard, they pointed out that, as communities of color gain more ground in electoral participation, having these measures makes it possible for them to be heard and their problems better represented.

Avenel Joseph, executive vice president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, explained that it is important to build a future for health, beyond a color, a zip code or culture, since everyone has the right to health and the measures that provide the opportunity to expand services.

The measures provide opportunities for communities that have been attacked by racism and other acts of violence, giving them a voice and a vote on policies that are important to the community, and in recent years there have been ballot measures that have had a great impact, he noted.

“We work to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to achieve better health, and we want people and communities facing these challenges to have a voice and a say in what matters most to them,” said Avenel Joseph.

He also commented that the measures on the ballots are part of the system that is working, it promotes direct democracy that is reflected in citizen participation and we must work to have fairer measures.

Chris Melody Fields Figueredo, executive director of the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center Foundation, explained that it is often misinformation that confuses voters, as the wording of the measure is often confusing to the community.

This has meant that some measures that are very beneficial for the population have not been approved and have only been included on the ballots. Therefore, it is important that the translations and the text are understandable for everyone, in addition to the information regarding each measure being available in several languages, said Fields Figueredo.

Richard Von Glahn, political director of Missouri Jobs for Justice, said the measures bring the community together, as they provide a space to express their demands and problems.

An example of this, he said, was in Missouri, where more than 900 people collected signatures to support a measure, bringing the community closer together.

In addition to the benefits, it has been noted that ballot initiatives are not directly favorable or detrimental to a party, but rather it is really the community choosing based on its needs and benefits, which is why it becomes a really useful tool for citizen participation.

Trump threatens to impose tariffs of 25% on all products from Mexico and Canada, Mexican president responds without hesitation

US President-elect Donald Trump threatens to impose a 25 percent tariff on products from Mexico and Canada.

Listen to this note:

“Estimado presidente electo Donald Trump,

They put him off for fear of reprisals

Listen to this note:

The Redwood City Council voted 4-3 to draft ordinances restricting cooperation with U.S. immigration agencies in the face of Donald Trump's threats of mass raids.

The representative's proposal Chris Sturken He originally had a December date for a vote on his proposed ordinances, expressing the need to be ready before Donald Trump returned to the presidency.

More than 50 people, from children to adults, expressed the fear that Trump's threats have generated in the community.

Children and young people expressed that, despite being American citizens, they are afraid of losing their parents, or that their friends' parents will be taken away by immigration.

Of all the comments, there were only two against, claiming that the city already has similar ordinances; in that sense, they kept putting it off and from deciding in December it was pushed to January and then to some day in the first quarter of next year.

As the song says, they left it “for April or May.”

Rep. Eakin said she didn't see the need to rush things, preferring to do something slow but helpful, saying it was "sexy" to make quick decisions in support, but she doubted they would help. Mayor Jeff Gee and Rep. Howard expressed fear of losing federal resources if the decision was made not to cooperate with the federal government.

They were put off for fear of retaliation. During a session, the Redwood City Council voted 4 to 3 to write ordinances restricting cooperation with immigration agencies.

What is being asked is neither new nor radical: Los Angeles City Council members all voted in favor of their city not cooperating with immigration agencies.

Unfortunately, it was clear that three members of the City Council did not know how to use empathy and put aside their privileged position to put themselves in the shoes of the people who came to ask for support and protection, or they simply lacked the pants.

In the end it was set for some date in the first quarter of next year.

San Mateo County confirms homophobic messages by Corpus sheriff

Homophobic messages from Sheriff Corpus

Listen to this note:

Redwood City could become a sanctuary city for immigrants

Drawing of the Redwood City Courthouse. The City Council will discuss whether to make Redwood City a sanctuary city for immigrants.
The Redwood City Council will discuss Monday the possibility of including an ordinance that Restricts the Use of Municipal Resources to Assist or Cooperate with Immigration Authorities, thereby allowing Redwood City to become a sanctuary city for immigrants.

Listen to this note:

The Redwood City Council will discuss on Monday the possibility of including an ordinance that Restricts the Use of Municipal Resources to Assist or Cooperate with Immigration Authorities, thus allowing the city to become a sanctuary for immigrants.

The recommendation was made by Councilman Chris Sturken to City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz for the City Council to consider their request at its meeting today, Monday, November 25, and to include a Sanctuary City ordinance on the Council's December 16 agenda.

The request, according to Sturken, comes in the context of President-elect Donald Trump's threats to carry out mass deportations and thereby separate families, which have made the county and Redwood City a diverse and multicultural city.

“With a history of deportations and family separation during the previous Trump administration and the credible threat of mass deportations by the president-elect during his next administration, I believe it is necessary to consider a sanctuary ordinance to protect Redwood City families from deportation and separation,” the council member said.

In addition, she said, leaders of the Faith in Action organization shared with her that there have been multiple testimonies from landlords who say they will call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to report their tenants when they raise concerns about the rent or the habitability of their homes.

In response, Sturken held a community listening session on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Yard, where 20 attendees supported the council considering an ordinance on the matter, with at least two residents asking how the immigrant community would be protected and how school districts prepare for family separations in which the caregiver is detained and the child is left at school.

“I am proud of our Welcoming City designation and our police department’s current policy of non-cooperation with ICE. However, it is my understanding that, while city resources and personnel from other departments have never been used in cooperation with ICE to our knowledge, ICE may use them in the future,” he said.

He explained that in preparation for the incoming administration, it is essential that we codify our non-cooperation policy into an ordinance to protect the community from deportation and keep families together.

“I understand there could be ramifications for future federal funding if the City Council moves forward with an ordinance. I am interested in learning more about these risks as part of the referral process,” he wrote.

Kristi Noem is Trump's pick for Homeland Security secretary

Listen to this note:

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has been tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, a position that will be key to the country's immigration system.

On social media, South Dakota Governor Noem pledged to “secure the border and restore security to American communities.”

Trump's main focus has been on immigration issues, where he has promised to implement severe measures against migrants, warning that mass deportations will be carried out.

Kristi Lynn Noem, born November 30, 1971 in Watertown, South Dakota, is an American politician and member of the Republican Party, who served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and served as the U.S. Representative for South Dakota's at-large congressional district from 2011 to 2019.

Noem is the fourth woman to represent South Dakota in Congress; in March 2011, Noem was appointed by Texas Republican Congressman Pete Sessions as one of twelve regional directors of the National Republican Congressional Committee during the 2012 election campaign.

Kristi Noem has previously expressed her opposition to migrants, as she sent National Guard soldiers to the Texas-Mexico border as governor.

On his Facebook account in April 2021, he expressed “my message to illegal immigrants is: call me when you are an American. In the meantime, South Dakota will not accept any relocation of illegal immigrants by President Biden.”

If confirmed by the Senate, she will lead an agency that oversees entities such as the Coast Guard and the Secret Service. It will be a complicated job, given that Trump had six national security leaders during his first term.

In a statement on social media, Trump called Noem “very strong on border security.”

Noem, for her part, pledged on social media to “protect the border and restore security to American communities so that families once again have the opportunity to pursue the American dream.”

As head of the Department of Homeland Security, Noem is expected to crack down on migrants, tighten security and carry out mass deportations, as she will now have to oversee an agency that controls everything from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Secret Service to customs, U.S. Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The publication of his book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” sparked controversy when he revealed that he killed his pet when it did not show the signs of an ideal hunting dog.

Bombings don't stop: Mexican journalists in Lebanon

Mexican journalists in Lebanon
Mexican journalists in Lebanon have taken on the task of reporting on the events that have taken place since the bombings. Amidst all the chaos, resilience is what is most surprising.

Israel's attacks on Lebanon have not stopped, more than 3,000 people have been killed, 14,000 injured, a million more displaced and more than 200 children have died in Lebanon, said journalists Témoris Grecko and Manuel Ortiz, during the radio program Por la Libre, which included a special broadcast from Lebanon.

The attacks in Lebanon have left an alarming number of dead, although the figures are only estimates, the reality will always be harsher, however the resilience among the population is still present, it is important to recognize the unity and strength that stands out among the same people.

The death toll in Lebanon surpassed most of the daily toll recorded in Gaza during last year's conflict and doubled the average daily death toll during the deadliest year of the Syrian war.

Faced with such a complicated situation, an independent agency is launching an agricultural project. These are urban professionals who promote the circular and self-sustaining economy, seeking to mobilize the local economy in projection of the residents, as commented by journalist and documentary filmmaker Témoris Grecko.

“This issue of resilience is important, how there are people who in the midst of tragedy look for options, that is also the kind of thing we have to report, that people are resisting and resisting with a project as beautiful as this, an economy that breaks with dependency, supporting refugees, supporting displaced people in a very complicated area,” said Témoris Grecko.

In the face of the latest attacks, the support among the people is what is present and continues to surprise among so much chaos, "the only people we saw were people who were coming to rescue those who were victims of this drone attack and well, there is total destruction in the place," added Grecko.

The speech says that Israel is attacking military targets, according to them they are places where there are ammunition and this is not the case, there are attacks against civilians, Manuel Ortiz even mentioned that two fishermen who were fishing locally died, they lost their lives due to these attacks.

“More than 200 children have died in Lebanon in the last two months,” said Manuel Ortiz.

An experience that happened to them was around 4:00 am, there were five very loud explosions, it was in an upper middle class area, they destroyed an eight-story building and left a crater, a fact that surprised him because it had never happened there in Beirut, later the videos of these explosions were leaked, explained documentary filmmaker Grecko.

Témoris Grecko recently won the national journalism award in Mexico, as part of the work of this journalist he has the initiative to OpenWorld.info, is an informative space that seeks to bring people together through more responsible journalism without political or commercial influence.

You are invited to be part of this project. You can contribute from $100 or $200 Mexican pesos or $10 dollars, as it is a medium independent of agencies. It is financed through donations and support. Thanks to social contributions, we can carry out coverage in different countries, work and promote responsible and independent journalism.

In an interview, a Lebanese resident was asked what responsibility the United States has in these conflicts. The interviewee replied that the United States has been financing Israel, meaning that the destruction and massacres are sponsored, and that they support certain political powers.

The deaths of innocent people hurt because these acts of destruction are paid for with the taxes of American citizens, concluded Témoris and Ortiz.

Tom Homan: Trump's new 'border czar'

Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Tom Homan as the “border czar”

Listen to this note:

Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Tom Homan as the "border czar" who will be responsible for US border policy.

“Tom Homan will be in charge of all deportations of illegal aliens back to their home countries,” said President-elect Donald Trump.

Homan was head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during Trump's first term, an issue that has raised concerns among many because he is responsible for the "zero tolerance" policy that separated children from their families during the Republican president's first term.

The appointment does not require Senate confirmation, putting Homan in charge of overseeing U.S. immigration policy and border security, giving him jurisdiction over the country's northern and southern borders, including maritime and air security, which has been a concern for migrants following talk of mass deportations.

Thomas Douglas Homan, born November 28, 1961 in West Carthage, New York, earned a degree in criminal justice from Jefferson Community College and a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute, and was a police officer and immigration officer.

He worked as an investigator and border agent before being appointed Executive Deputy Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2013 by Barack Obama, and then joined ICE for the first time in 2017 as acting director. He was known for his harsh measures, such as the family separation policy, which was harshly criticized by the media.

This severe immigration policy had physical and psychological consequences for many families, but especially for children who were separated from their loved ones. This set of measures was called “zero tolerance” and was implemented during Donald Trump's presidency.

During his time at ICE, a record number of children were recorded in US custody, causing great concern among migrant rights groups who began to question his actions.

For this new phase, Homan will take a new “selective” approach to deportation operations, as he has said that they will focus on identifying people who have prior criminal convictions, and he has also mentioned that he will implement measures to control and sanction illegal hiring practices.

Priority will be given to deporting those who are considered a “threat” to the country’s public security, which has sown distrust among communities.

Homan has said cooperation between local and federal immigration enforcement agencies is essential to achieving the goals Trump has set.

While his position does not give him complete control over ICE, Customs and Border Protection or other related agencies, he has the trust Trump has expressed in him to carry out his will.

Mehmet Oz will put Medicaid and Medicare coverage at risk

Dr. Mehmet Oz

Listen to this note:

Under Dr. Mehmet Oz, a series of Republican-proposed changes to Medicaid coverage are expected, leaving communities uncertain about their health services.
