Authorities warned the public this week against scammers claiming to be deputies with the San Francisco Sheriff's Office as part of an imposter scam.
These scammers often call residents by phone, threatening to arrest victims for allegedly failing to respond to federal warrants or subpoenas, failing to heed subpoenas or failing to report for jury duty, the Sheriff's Office said in a statement. press release on Tuesday.
Authorities also said these fake deputies would claim that the Sheriff's Office already mailed the victim a documentation letter and that the victim did not show up for his scheduled court date.
Instead of arresting them, scammers will demand between $5,000 and $10,500 in payment from victims via wire transfer or gift card, the Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities noted that scammers often call from a fake caller ID “SAN FRANCISCO COUNTY.” A woman was a victim of the scam, the Sheriff's Office said.
The public is reminded that the Sheriff's Office does not charge telephone fees of any kind.
Those who have received a similar phone call or relevant information are urged to call (415) 554-7225 or 911 in case of emergency.
