The play will represent the sentiments of all residents on such pressing issues as racial equity and social justice, as well as equal rights.

At the meeting, which will be held virtually through Zoom, this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., the two finalist artists will present their work and give their interpretation to all attendees.

This development follows the August 10, 2020, adoption by the Redwood City Council of a resolution reaffirming the city's commitment to racial equity, and requesting that the Redwood City Arts Commission along with the Racial Equity Steering Committee, comprised of community members take on this task.

This is in order to formulate an outreach work plan to solicit more community input and erect a mural that symbolizes and responds to Redwood City's commitment to racial equity.

"Our work is guided by the core belief that those who are directly affected by racial equity issues should be at the center of the design and implementation process," the Council noted at the time.

Following that, through a community-wide solicitation process, a Racial Equity Steering Committee was formed, which is led by Arts Commission Chair Ashley Quintana and Arts Commissioner Erin Ashford.

Members include Anna Lee Mraz, Ellyn Daly, Sheila Cepero, Jordan Sandoval, Alya Madhani, Leon Baham and David Jacobson.

Murals are a way to engage and celebrate the community. In this tradition, the Racial Equity Steering Committee and the Arts Commission, in collaboration with the community, provide an opportunity to create a mural that explores Redwood City's commitment to racial equity and social justice issues with the goal of facilitating communication and improving equity for all in the community.

This racial equity and social justice mural will be located on a major thoroughfare that connects downtown to public spaces and residential areas of the city.

The total budget for the construction, design, materials, installation and artist's fee for the racial equity and social justice mural is $100,000, which was allocated by the City Council.

"It is very important for the Racial Equity Steering Committee to hear from the community, which is why it is imperative that Redwood City residents attend the virtual meeting this Wednesday to choose and learn what could represent our community in a mural and that and feel that it is in some way a step forward in building a more equal and less racist community," said Anna Lee Mraz, a member of the Racial Equity Steering Committee.
