Activists supporting a permanent ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza called for a demonstration in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza at 2 p.m. this Saturday.

The square in front of City Hall has been the scene of numerous protests since the October 7 attacks by Hamas that killed about 1,200 Israelis. Hamas says Israel's siege, bombings and retaliatory invasion of Gaza have killed about 15,000 people.

A truce collapsed Friday morning after an exchange of prisoners and hostages.

“The humanitarian and political crisis in Gaza is worsening every day and the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza resumed immediately after the pause ended,” said Lara Kiswani of Oakland, executive director of the Arab Resource and Organization Center.

“Millions of people around the world hoped that the pause would be extended into a permanent ceasefire, and the US government still has the power to stop this genocide today,” Kiswani added in a statement on Friday.

The Oakland City Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution supporting a permanent ceasefire in the war.
