This Tuesday, at 5:12 o'clock, the Department of Emergency Management ?DEM, for its acronym in English? of San Francisco, and local authorities gathered at the historic Lotta Fountain in the center of the city, to commemorate the 117th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake, marking the start of a series of activities to prepare society for disasters that nature
Thus, from today until April 22, there will be a series of activities that include preparation workshops, to culminate with a fair that will feature an earthquake simulator, gifts, and lunch for the first 350 participants.
"This earthquake anniversary is an opportunity to educate the public about earthquake preparedness," local authorities said in a statement.
The anniversary commemoration of the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire at Lotta's Fountain, which is where many San Franciscans gathered 117 years ago for support after the devastating earthquake, kicked off at 5:12 a.m., just right where the earthquake occurred at the time.
After the commemoration ceremony at the Lotta Fountain, a procession was held to the famous golden fire hydrant at the corner of 20th and Church streets for the annual repainting ceremony.
The celebrated fire hydrant is said to have been the only water source used by thousands of volunteers responsible for saving the south side of the Mission District during the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake.
Earthquake preparedness events will continue on Thursday and Friday, April 20 and 21, with workshops focused on best practices for distributing emergency supplies to the public, as well as improving community-driven and equitable emergency response. Both events closed to the general public.
Thus, on Thursday, April 20, starting at 12:00 noon, the Commodity Distribution Point Workshop will take place, which will test the revised process for operating a distribution location point where members of the public can go to receive supplies after a disaster when there is limited access through traditional supply chains.
On Friday, April 21, at 12:00 o'clock, the Community Support Plan Workshop will be held. This will focus on advancing strategies to ensure a more equitable and community-driven emergency response while reviewing and informing an upcoming revision of the Community Support Plan.
Participants will include community service organizations and other agencies from a variety of sectors.
The week's events will culminate on Saturday, April 22 with Get Ready, Stay Ready, a community readiness fair at the San Francisco Main Library and Fulton Plaza.
At closing, all Bay Area residents are invited to the San Francisco Main Public Library and Fulton Plaza for an afternoon of fun, community and preparation.
Hosted by DEM, this free event will feature an earthquake simulator, preparedness giveaways, free lunch for the first 350 resource fair attendees, hands-on preparedness training, and workshops on preparing your home and loved ones for a disaster.
The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
