George Smith announced as San Mateo County Veteran of the Year

Public service is the string that ties George Smith's life's work together - U.S. Marine, firefighter and volunteer. And in recognition of his dedication, the San Mateo County Veterans Commission has announced that he will be the 2022 Veteran of the Year.

The award presented each year is for a local veteran who goes "above and beyond" to serve the community.

Smith will be honored at a luncheon on Nov. 10, 2022 along with others dedicated to helping veterans or organizations that advance veterans' causes: Wendy Weller and Andrew Trapani, selected as Patriots of the Year; and Veterans Surf Alliance, the Business of the Year.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier will also be honored with a lifetime achievement award.

U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Thomas A. Cropper, ret. Thomas A. Cropper ?retired?, president of the California State University Maritime Academy, will deliver the keynote address.

The Veterans Awards Luncheon has become an annual tradition. Now in its seventh year, winners are read their accomplishments and receive a public token of gratitude.

"These moments are incredibly powerful," said Warren Slocum, a member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and Army veteran. "It's important that we all recognize the work and sacrifice of these veterans and their advocates. I would say equally important is how that spirit of service is so inspiring to the rest of us."

The Veterans Recognition Luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Westin San Francisco Airport ? Millbrae. Those interested in purchasing tickets can give click here.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors established the Veterans Commission in June 2015 with a mission to promote programs and policies that address the unmet needs of veterans in the county.

Established in 1946, the San Mateo County Veterans Service Office (CVSO) helps veterans access state and federal benefits that assist veterans, their spouses and family members.

In turn, CVSO provides information and referrals to a wide range of services and connects veterans with programs such as the California Veterans College Fee Waiver for veterans and dependents.
