Government of Mexico demands investigation after death of a compatriot by use of lethal force in Oxnard, California

Following the death of 18-year-old Mexican Cristian Baltazar Torres, which occurred last Friday, April 7, by officers of the Oxnard Police Department, California, the Government of Mexico, through the Consulate in Oxnard, has demanded that fully investigate what happened.

"The corresponding authorities have been formally requested to carry out exhaustive investigations in accordance with the law, within the framework of due legal process, and to determine the criminal and/or civil responsibility of the people involved," the Mexican government said through of a statement issued by the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico specified that after an initial review of the incident by recognized legal specialists in the field of civil rights litigation, the opinion has been received that the use of lethal force against Cristian Baltazar was unreasonable in the circumstances presented in the case. video released by the Oxnard Police Department.

In the same way, he stated that he will take the diplomatic and legal measures at his disposal, and will maintain close communication with the authorities in charge of the investigation through the Consulate in Oxnard. 

In turn, he explained that the Foreign Ministry has been in contact with the family of Baltazar Torres from the outset to provide legal advice and consular assistance, and that it will continue to provide accompaniment to advise them on their rights in light of the unfortunate event.

"The Government of Mexico opposes the excessive use of force when detaining any person, regardless of their nationality or immigration status," he said.

Finally, the Foreign Ministry reiterated its condolences for the loss of Cristian Baltazar's life and endorsed its commitment to provide timely, comprehensive, and effective care to all Mexicans abroad.
