San Mateo County deputies arrested a man identified as Jason Hewitt, 34, of Modesto, in connection with an assault case.

Some San Mateo County affordable housing residents now have access to the free transportation pilot program supported by all public transportation agencies in the nine-county Bay Area.

Affordable housing residents at properties managed by MidPen Housing gained access to the Clipper BayPass program Monday as regional transit officials seek to make public transportation more user-friendly and gauge demand for a universal fare system.

BayPass is also available to students at Santa Rosa Junior College and select students at San Francisco State University, San Jose State University and the University of California, Berkeley.

San Mateo County publicly discussed the possibilities of establishing an oversight committee for the county Sheriff's Office for the first time during the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.

The County Attorney's Office and Fixin? San Mateo County, a grassroots organization that advocates for oversight of the Sheriff's Office, gave presentations on potential models and benefits of oversight, followed by feedback from supervisors and the public.  

The discussion came in the wake of Assembly Bill 1185, which passed in the fall of 2020 and took effect in 2021. The legislation allows California counties to create citizens' oversight boards and suggests investigation, transparency, and community participation in the process.

The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office filed a civil complaint against a crabber who allegedly illegally removed crabs from a protected area.

An announcement from the office's Consumer and Environmental Unit reports that a civil complaint was filed Monday against George Jue for allegedly taking 36 live Dungeness crabs in traps located in a Marine Protected Area on January 8, 2022.

The complaint alleges that Jue's actions are an illegal business practice and seeks an injunction to stop the conduct and civil penalties of up to $2,500 for each violation.
