Redwood City imposes temporary moratorium on retail sales of firearms

redwood city

The Redwood City Council on Tuesday approved an emergency ordinance that temporarily prohibits retail establishments from selling firearms or ammunition in the city.

And it is that, the growing concern of the community has led the federal government, the state of California and several local jurisdictions to consider additional options to mitigate firearms violence.

Thus, the City has instructed staff to conduct community engagement and investigate possible local regulations on firearms retailers. The moratorium on retail establishments that sell firearms or ammunition will be in effect while this investigation and engagement takes place.

"The City Council has listened to the community's concerns around gun safety," said the mayor. Giselle Hale

The local official explained that the National Institute of Health and Human Development determined that violence with firearms is the main cause of death for children and young people.

"Over the next several months, we will take the time necessary to carefully develop the appropriate regulations for such establishments for future City Council consideration," Hale said.

Although there are currently no known firearms outlets in Redwood City, inquiries have recently been made about new firearms outlets in the city.

Currently, a firearms sales establishment is permitted by law within any commercial and mixed-use zoning district, meaning it is treated like any other retail use and is permitted without City or staff review .

Notably, many of Redwood City's mixed-use and commercial zoning districts are in close proximity to residential neighborhoods, schools, day care centers, places of public worship, places of gathering, community centers, parks, and libraries.

The emergency ordinance went into effect immediately after its approval and will be in effect for a period of up to 45 days.

Staff anticipates requesting a time extension of the moratorium at the November 28 City Council meeting to conduct research, obtain community input, and review potential zoning changes with the Planning Commission.
