Antony Blinken expressed his concern about journalist murders in Mexico

Antony Blinken

U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken expressed its concern over the murders of journalists in Mexico, and thus joined the demonstrations of other countries and Mexican and foreign organizations against attacks against the journalistic profession.

"The high number of journalists killed in Mexico this year and the ongoing threats they face are troubling. I join those calling for greater accountability and protection for Mexican journalists. My heart goes out to the loved ones of those who gave their lives for the truth."

The statement made through his Twitter account raised a furor in the Mexican government, as Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that "he is not well informed".

"He is misinformed, because otherwise he would be acting in bad faith. Of course it is very regrettable that there are murders of journalists. The only thing is that in all cases action is being taken. There is no impunity. If the head of the State Department intervenes, I think he does not know, he is not well informed," he said in his morning conference.

Since the beginning of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration in 2018 to date, 151 journalists and human rights defenders have been murdered, which is why Antony Blinken expressed his concern about murders of journalists in Mexico.

In January, José Luis Gamboa, director of a news portal, was murdered in the state of Veracruz; freelance photographer Margarito Martínez and journalist Lourdes Maldonado, in the border city of Tijuana, as well as Roberto Toledo, a contributor to the Monitor Michoacán portal, who was shot in the city of Zitácuaro.

Just on February 10, journalist Heber López Vásquez was murdered in the municipality of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.

In the context of these statements, the Attorney General's Office (FGJCDMX) also killed television host Michell Simón Tadeo, whose body was found in a spot south of Mexico City, which brings to six the number of people related to the media murdered so far this year.

After losing communication with the model and actress for more than three days, her parents traveled from Veracruz to Mexico City in order to file a complaint with the authorities and find her whereabouts.

Workers in an ejido area mitigating a fire in the town of Santo Tomás Ajusco, Tlalpan municipality, informed authorities of the discovery of a woman's body.

In a statement, the FGJCDMX said that it is working together with the Secretariat of Citizen Security in different lines of investigation, in addition to maintaining contact with family and friends to clarify the facts about the death of the victim.

So far this year, six journalists have been murdered in the country. These events have triggered expressions of concern and demands for the protection of journalists to the Mexican government by national and international organizations and foreign governments, as in the case of Antony Blinken who expressed his concern about the murders of journalists in Mexico.
